The crown is the very top of the chimney usually constructed of mortar, sometimes concrete. It serves as a seal at the top of the chimney similar to the roof of a house. Because the crown is directly exposed to the elements it almost always develops cracks and deterioration. Rainwater finds its way into the chimney through these cracks and can cause deterioration in other areas of the chimney.
Cracks in the crown can be filled for an inexpensive temporary repair, or a sealer can be applied to the entire crown for a more long term repair. A chase cover installation is a permanent solution to a faulty crown.
